LAA and CAA Gyro info

Home built (kit aircraft) in the UK come under the control of the Light Aircraft Association (LAA). The LAA have a team of inspectors and engineers and also are responsible for Permit issues, renewals and aircraft modifications.

Aside from overseeing Kit Built Gyro’s, the LAA also can oversee maintenance and permit renewals on factory built gyro’s. More info on fee’s, procedures etc. can be found on their website.

The LAA have been very proactive within the gyro community having recently signed off two major modifications on single seaters, approved a selection of new rotors for the Single Seat aircraft and approved funding to approve their own Gyroplane Test Pilot.

The CAA remain the controlling body when it comes to the factory built gyroplanes. So if you are not a member of the LAA or you prefer to get your aircraft maintained and permitted by a CAA then of course that is your choice. Very important before you make an application to the CAA that you ensure all paperwork is up to date and all placards are correct. Maybe consider having your engineer present at the inspection or attend an engineering organisation that can issue the CAA permit revalidation.
